CHAPTER 10

Grace walked quickly, pulling the collar of her thick coat up higher around her cheeks as the cool breeze stung her skin. The snow crunched loudly under her feet as she came around the corner by O’Hara’s Mercantile. She had decided to enjoy her Saturday by baking today while the weather was too cold to be outside.

After speaking with Connor last night, she was determined to find something to keep her mind busy and forget the stubborn man even existed.

So, she was going to make some cookies to take over to Sylvia later. Hopefully, her brother’s wife would be feeling well enough to enjoy them. It would be nice to have a visit with her friend and talk about something other than Connor.

As she got closer, she could see two children sitting on the bench outside.

“Lizzie? Oliver? What are you both doing out here?”

The little girl lifted a tear-soaked face and jumped up to wrap her arms around Grace’s legs. “Oh, Miss Hamilton. We have to go away. I’ll never see you ever again.”

Grace tried to understand what the child was saying but she wasn’t quite sure she was hearing things right. She looked at Oliver, pulling her eyebrows together in confusion as she pulled Lizzie along beside her, and sat down between the children.

“What is going on, Oliver?”

The boy’s eyes were wet but he was fighting the tears. He quickly looked away, staring down at the snowy ground by his feet. “Our grandma says she just can’t look after us anymore. It’s too hard, with her arthritis.” He glanced back up, his sad eyes meeting hers. “I’ve tried real hard to help around the house, and with Lizzie. I’ve tried to do what a man would do and keep us from being a burden but Grandma says she just can’t do it.”

Grace’s heart started pounding. If their grandma couldn’t look after them, where would they go? She was sure she’d heard at the time their parents died that they had no other family.

“I’m sure this is just some kind of misunderstanding. Where is your grandma now, Oliver?”

He tilted his head toward the mercantile. “She went in there. We’re waiting for the lawyer to arrive. Then once they figure everything out, he’s going to escort us to the orphanage in Oregon City in a few days.”

Her heart dropped into her stomach. What could she possibly say to these children that would make them feel better? They had no one except their grandmother and, now, they were being sent away to a life no child could want.

“You children stay right here. I’m going to go in and talk to your grandmother. Maybe you’ve just got things confused.” Grace stood up and started toward the steps.

Lizzie’s eyes were wide as she lifted her head. “Miss Hamilton, will you be able to get our grandma to change her mind? So we can stay here?”

“I’m not sure I can do anything, Lizzie, but I need to see what is going on. Just stay right here.
